PMHA AWARDS - CRITERIA
The Pownal Minor Hockey Association acknowledges the hard work and dedication of the players, coaches, officials and volunteers. These awards recognize the important contributions and the outstanding achievements of their members. Recipients are recognized at the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Banquet held in early April.
President’s Medal
This award is intended to go to the ‘unsung hero’ of a team; a player who, in the opinion of the coach/manager, plays a quiet but important role on the team. This player demonstrates a positive attitude on and off the ice, is self-motivated and has a true heart for the game of hockey. This is a very important award that does not necessarily go to the player with the most talent or skill, but to the player with the most dedication and sportsmanship. This player is someone who could be depended upon to be present at each and every game and practice. This is the player who works with the coach and teammates for the good of the whole team. This player is someone who every coach would like on their team due to their level of commitment and willingness to learn.

Coach of the Year Award – 'A'
This award is presented on an annual basis to a Pownal Minor Hockey Coach who represents the values, goals and philosophy of Pownal Minor Hockey. This person demonstrates leadership of not only the children, but also the adults of the game, be it the parents, co-coaches, or officials.
Children come into hockey at the beginning of each season with enthusiasm and different attitudes and skill levels. Therefore our coaches, and in particular our “Coach of the Year”, would have demonstrated patience, allowing for individual differences; he/she would be a role model on and off the ice, while motivating and encouraging the growth of hockey’s younger enthusiasts. This coach demonstrates a balanced approach between playing competitively and ensuring that all players have fun during their season.
Parents, players or managers are asked to submit the names of coaches who would be deserving of this award, and provide a brief written explanation as to why the coach is being nominated.

Trainer of the Year Award
This award goes to the volunteer who oversees the safety of our children as they practice and play games. This person is present at every ice time, prepared to prevent injuries and to take the lead should an injury occur. This person must be able to make informed decisions, sometimes rather quickly, in order to ensure the safety of all players. This person will also step up to help a team where needed – be it to help out on the ice, the bench, or in the dressing room.

Manager of the Year Award
This award is presented to a Pownal Minor Hockey Team Manager who has shown dedication to their team through countless hours of volunteer work. This person has displayed exceptional organizational and planning skills.
This person has a positive impact on their respective team, has shown effective communication and promotes genuine respect for players, coaches, officials, opponents and parents. This person represents a positive public image for the PMHA.

The George “Butch” Brown Volunteer of the Year Award
This award is in memory of George “Butch” Brown who played his early years in the Pownal system. He played for Harry Fraser in the early years of the Midget Red Devils, and later starred with the Sherwood Junior team. He died of cancer as a young man.
This award is presented to someone who has been a long and dedicated volunteer in furthering the objectives of the Pownal Minor Hockey system over the years. It has gone to people who have coached, refereed, or held various positions within PMHA.

Most Improved Official of the Year Award
This award was created to honour the official who has proven to be the most improved from the start of the season to the end. The official must have also proven to take their role seriously and be willing to learn and have a positive attitude toward their evaluations.
The recipient of this award is selected by the Referee in Chief.

Official of the Year Award
This award was created to honour the official who has demonstrated dedication and commitment to his or her role as an official in the Pownal Minor Hockey Association, excelled in his or her duties on the ice and demonstrated a proper attitude as a representative of PMHA, both on and off the ice.
The recipient of this award is selected by the Referee in Chief.

The Mike Heron Award
This award is in memory of Mike Heron, a young man from Johnstons River who was a goaltender for the Midget AAA Red Devils in the mid-1980's. He was tragically killed in an industrial accident while working on a summer job. Mike's family were instrumental in having the award put in place to honour their son's memory.
This award goes to a U15 or U18 AAA player who is nominated by their coach. The player nominated has to have demonstrated skill, dedication, and leadership to the game and to their team. In addition, the player should have demonstrated that they are a responsible student and a person who has been prepared to contribute to the team in other ways (perhaps was given a leadership role on the ice).

The Jamie Irving Shur-Gain Feeds Award
This award, donated by Shur-Gain Feeds, is in memory of Jamie Irving, a minor hockey player from Cherry Valley who played in the Pownal Minor Hockey Association. Jamie died in a drowning accident in the summer of 1996 while on a 4-H exchange trip in Quebec. Prior to his death, he played with the Midget AAA Red Devils. Jamie was truly a team player who worked hard and who was always eager to help and support his teammates.
This award will be presented at the appreciation night on an annual basis to the Midget U18 AAA player who, in the opinion of the coach, has played the game with heart and dedication. This player should display team spirit and be a good all-around hockey player. This nominee should also show leadership in community activities such as 4-H, church groups, etc. Preference will be given to a player that comes from a farming background.
The recipient of this award is picked by the coaches.

This award is intended for a female ‘A’ hockey player (U11 or U13) who shows enthusiasm, initiative, and all-around team spirit. Elliott Brazil Award
This award is presented to a U15 player who best exemplifies enthusiasm and a love for the game just by participating in the sport. The player should demonstrate an attitude where winning isn’t the only goal, but the joy of competing to the best of their abilities and afterwards having the grace to acknowledge friend or foe no matter the outcome of the game is paramount. This individual represents themselves, their peers, their family, and the Association in a positive fashion, both on and off the ice.

Goalie of the Year Award - Male
Goalies are at times the forgotten players on a team. They are the players who, if a team loses, usually takes the loss the hardest. A goalie is a player who is usually the backbone of his team. This award is presented to the goaltender who had demonstrated sound, consistent abilities through the season. This player displays positive conduct and attitude on and off the ice, works hard to improve and can handle winning, and more importantly losing, with dignity.

U7 Volunteer of the Year Award
This award is presented to a Pownal Minor Hockey volunteer at the U7 level who has provided a positive introduction to the game of hockey and displayed dedication to the development of player skills and basic fundamentals. This person has created an environment in which players learn new skills, have fun and engage in physical activity. Most important of all, this person provides for a safe and positive environment for the PMHA's newest members to learn and enjoy the game of hockey.

James Dunn Memorial Future Leader Award
This new award (first given in 2023) will be presented annually to the graduating Pownal Minor Hockey Association player (including Pownal players who have finished their minor hockey careers with the Charlottetown Knights, Eastern Stars or Central Storm Programs) entering their first year of post-secondary education, who has demonstrated a strong desire to make a difference in their community and who has demonstrated skills to show their future leadership potential.
Players are encouraged to submit a written application (maximum 1000 words) explaining how they meet the criteria to Darcy Dunn at darcydunn25@gmail.com. A letter of reference to support your application is strongly encouraged. The recipient of this award will receive $3000 to go towards their post secondary studies.
