RED DEVILS END THE SEASON HOW THEY STARTED

2014-03-06

The Pownal Red Devils won their last game of the season defeating the West Prince Warriors 3 – 2.

The Pownal Red Devils won their last game of the season defeating the West Prince Warriors 3 – 2.  “The boys played well moving the puck very nicely,” commented Coach Cory who was relegated to watching the game on the sidelines. Things did not get any better for Coach Cory who was greeted by his players at the front door showing off the game's program with his rather “snug” soccer gear for this year’s Halloween Costume.

In what amounted to an exciting final game, the Red Devils played with a lot of heart.  Pownal did not score until the second period when Holden Bradley tied up the game.  Aidan Arsenault and Simon Hughes assisted.  Red Devils took the lead for a short time when Landon MacDonald connected nicely with Sam Parsons and Lance Kennedy to score his first of the season.  West Prince Warriors came back seconds later to tie it up before the second period ended.

The final period of the season was hard fought. Caleb Drake demonstrated his skills once again between the pipes stopping the Warriors on a number of times. Camden MacLeod called up from the AA’s supported and helped his defensemen who were strong in front of Caleb for three solid periods.  The Red Devil forwards worked with defense back checking and attacking on every occasion.  And the effort paid off when defenseman Tristan Lea combined with Drew MacPhee to set up the game winning goal scored by the birthday boy Luca Le Clair.

“Getting to watch the game from a different perspective I got to see how well these boys can play. I thought they were the better team this game moving the puck extremely well. Defense did a great job of getting the puck up on the breakouts and transitions. In around the net we just seemed to find the open man and we got rewarded for it. Everyone hustled in all zones and our man to man coverage was relentless tonight.  Caleb put on another acrobatic show tonight keeping us in the game and providing some excitement. It was great to see the boys end the season on a high note giving Coach Joey an early gift on the eve of his daughter’s birth. Very sad to see it all end but to end it working hard and playing to the last whistle is something to be proud of.  I know I am proud of the way the boys handled themselves tonight," said Coach Cory.

“Great way to finish up for the boys,” commented more than one fan after the game.  The Red Devils were treated with cake and ice-cream and enjoyed watching the skills competition highlights from the EDD McNeil tournament the team participated in over the weekend. The boys will be putting those skills to practice when they face their greatest opponents:  their parents in a friendly game.

The Pownal Red Devils Atom AAA organization wish to thank their moms, dads, grandparents, brothers, sisters, past coaches, and friends who came out to many of the games and cheered them on.  Special thanks to Chris MacPhee who trained the boys off-ice and gave them a good start to proper strength training techniques.   Warm thanks as well to Ron Kennedy and Pam Lund for being there to soothe bumps and bruises.  And a big round of applause to our official timekeepers and scorers, Hunter Bradley and Larkin Kennedy who braved the cold and microphone challenges to provide us entertainment and announcements throughout the games.
