For the third time this season the Red Devils faced off against the Montague Norsemen with hopes that 2015 would start with numbers in the win column instead of the tie column.  A last minute goalie shuffle saw Nathan Bruce return to the net for Pownal.

Scoring started quickly with a goal from Lance Kennedy assisted by Noah Brehaut and Carson Lund.  Then Dylan Batchilder broke through the Norseman “D” putting one away top shelf unassisted.  Montague responded by stealing the puck in the Red Devils end and popping in a quick goal.  Batchilder followed it up a few minutes later with his second goal high and away, this time assisted by line mates David MacLeod and Tyler Phalen.

The Red Devils had Solid opportunities on the Montague net in the second period resulting in a goals from Drew MacPhee assisted by Connor MacPherson and  from Noah Brehaut with helpers from Carson Lund and Lance Kennedy.

The score was 4-2 in the third frame when the Batchilder, Phalen and MacLeod line scored again to net a hat trick for centre man Batchilder. Later in the 3rd Sam Parsons was rocked at the boards in the Norsemen end resulting in a power play.  Parsons soldiered on and returned to play the next shift.   David MacLeod tipped a high rocket shot from Will Murley into the net but he was denied by the ref who called it a high stick.  Murley is known for his slap shot that reportedly can break a frozen puck.

Call up Ben Bassett played a solid game on the blue line to replace Owen Brown. He was even able to crack the Montague defense and fire a solid shot on goal but was denied.  One Pownal grandparent was quick to acknowledge Bathchilder’s hat trick but his attempt to toss a cap on the ice was stymied due to the netting!

Pownal put 33 shots on goal while Montague took 16 shots at Bruce who played solid between the pipes.  The score would remain 6 to 2 for Pownal solidifying a three game winning streak. Hopefully their tie streak will be left behind in 2014 as they face off against the Eastern Division leader Flames in North River on Sunday January 11!  Go Pownal Go!
