CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY TAKES THE FIGHT TO THE ICE

2014-05-30

FACE-OFF AGAINST CANCER CHARITY EVENT

NHL Alumni and hockey enthusiasts of all skill levels are lacing up for the Capital Honda Face-Off Against Cancer week-end hockey tournament, September 5 - 7th, 2014. The event, being held at the Cari Complex in Charlottetown, will be the first of its kind in P.E.I.

The name of the game is fun, but funds raised will support the Canadian Cancer Society’s mission - the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of Islanders living with cancer.

Face-Off Against Cancer will provide a once in a lifetime opportunity for Islanders to share a week-end with hockey legends and celebrities.

Former NHL star, Ray Bourque is excited to be a part of this event.  “I’ll be lacing up in honour of my mom who died of colon cancer and my dad who lost his life to lung cancer,” says Bourque.  “For those fighting cancer every day, it’s a constant struggle.  That’s why I hope Islanders will come out and join a team.”

Bourque, whose name is near-synonymous with the Boston Bruins franchise, won a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001. Since his retirement, the hockey hall of famer says he’s proud to support charities like the Canadian Cancer Society.

"Half of all cancers can be prevented through healthy living, and the Capital Honda Face-Off Against Cancer  brings together physical activity and individuals who want to support the great work of the Canadian Cancer Society,” says Olympian and honorary chair, Heather Moyse. ”I'm proud and excited to support this initiative to help increase awareness of the power of prevention.”

The tournament features the Capital Honda Face-Off Against Cancer Celebrity Draft, when teams will add professional hockey players and local celebrities to their roster of players or to coach their team.  The top fundraising team gets the first pick.  Space is limited, with only twenty team spots available.

Other tournament highlights include: three guaranteed games; red carpet opening ceremony; Friday night draft; family event and Saturday night bash!

“We are overwhelmed by the support we have received from NHL alumni and the corporate community.” says Lori Barker, Canadian Cancer Society, P.E.I. Division, Executive Director. “We are very excited to have Capital Honda involved in such a huge way and to have hockey legends like Ray Bourque and our own Billy MacMillan take the fight to the ice.”

Celebrities joining Bourque and MacMillan in this year’s event include: Bobby MacMillan, Forbie Kennedy, Errol Thompson, Al MacAdam, Don MacAdam, David Ling, Dave “Tucker” Flanagan, Brett Gallant, Freddy MacDonald, UPEI Panthers and Heather Moyse, as Honorary Chair. Additions to the celebrity line-up will be announced in upcoming months.
