Red Devils - Falcons End In Tie
2011-12-23
Action Friday night in the Atom AAA League had the Sherwood Falcons hosting the Pownal Red Devils at Cody Banks Arena. Despite hard work from both teams, neither team could score a winner as the game ended in a 3-3 tie.Sherwood opened the scoring less than a minute into the game when Kennedy Gallant wristed a shot from the left face off circle that beat netminder Logan Birt for an early 1-0 lead.
But Pownal answered back four minutes later when Matt Gordon dug the puck out behind the net, fed a pass in the corner to Keegan Mitchell, who walked out uncontested and jammed one past Dawson Hughes to tie the game 1-1.
Sherwood took the lead again with just over four minutes to play in the period, when Keiran Gallant scored on a pass from Nic Smith and Justin Richard. The Falcons had a 2-1 lead heading to the second period.
In the second, it was a goaltenders duel. Both Birt for the Red Devils and Hughes for the Falcons got their trappers working to perfection, as each snagged shot after shot out of the air to keep it a one-goal game. Pownal thought they had tied it early in the period as a shot snuck through the pads of the Falcons goalie. But a quick whistle from the referee didn't allow for any Red Devils to pounce on the loose puck in the crease and tuck it home.
The line of Mason Manztavrakos, Lucas ParsonsĀ and Andrew Sprague had a strong period. Luke Garnhum was also robbed of a sure goal on a one-time slap shot from the slot. Then, moments later, Manztavrakos and Hunter Bradley set up Andrew Sprague in the neutral zone. From there, he walked in around three Falcons defenders and put a nifty move on Hughes, sliding a backhand in for the game tying 2-2 goal.
But Sherwood quickly went up 3-2 in the third after Kennedy Gallant scored his second of the game. Pownal responded with just over four minutes left in the game when Matt Gordon repeated the Keegan Mitchell play, and walked out from behind the icing line to stuff one home and tie the game 3-3. Mitchell picked up the lone assist.
That ened a busy week for the Red Devils, who played three games in four nights, and took 5 out of a possible 6 points. Players now have a few days off for the Christmas break, and will be back at it Tuesday, December 27, when they host the Charlottetown Abbies at the Pownal Sports Centre. Game timeĀ is 6:40pm.
