MacInnis Proves worthy of Golden Jersey Award
2011-11-12
The third recipient of the Pownal Atom ‘AAA’‘s Gold Jersey Award went to Pownal’s net minder Erik MacInnis after the 2-2 battle with the Mid Isle Matrix. Erik proved worthy of the award and was presented with the “Gold Jersey” by head coach Steve Gordon following the game Tuesday nightThere’s some things in hockey and sports in general that are much easier said than done. The notion of being calm, especially during a game against one of the leagues strongest opponents, can render even the most talented athlete a bundle of nerves.
Erik MacInnis was none of that when he got the start in goal for the Red Devils and Matrix game in Crapaud on Tuesday night. The 9 year-old goalie was, in fact, the picture of calm in the 2-2 tie helping his team snag yet another point in the Provincial ‘AAA’ League Standings.
Coach Gordon commented on the game in general saying he was pleased with his teams performance. "Everyone contributed defensively during the game, but one player in particular came up with the ‘Golden Moment’ of the game for us. This weeks Gold Jersey Award which is awarded to the player who has the ‘Golden Moment’ of the game could be found between the pipes in Crapaud Tuesday night."
Most fans who watched the game would agree it was a contest between the goalies in this game.
"Erik put in a solid game with many glove saves and showed composure for the full 36 minutes. The teams were very close all night and in the second half of the game a Matrix forward was able to break away from the Pownal defence and make his way to the goal. It looked like the attacker also had Erik fooled until he threw the left pad out at the last second kicking the puck out of harm’s way. This save was met with excitement on the Pownal bench and seemed to rejuvenate the Pownal attack." says Gordon.
Erik was so pleased to have garnered the jersey and just like the Crosby Golden Moment the jersey seemed to have disappeared. Coach Gordon called in the RCMP who were at the Pownal Arena during Thursday’s practice looking for evidence or clues as to where it may have gone. "No doubt there was a road block set up on the Confederation Bridge in an attempt to keep the jersey on the Island so that it could be recovered in order to present it to the Golden Moment recipient from the upcoming games on Sunday and Tuesday." said Gordon.
So just who does have our teams prestigious award? Did one of our opponents sneak into our "Team Bus" and take it? Coach Gordon says "Maybe someone will feel the same pressure as the Crosby Caper and contact Crime Stoppers to return the jersey back to Pownal!!!!!"
Great Game Erik, Well deserved, congratulations from your coaches, fellow teammates and the parents!!!!!!!!
